Mitigating the plight of orphans and vulnerable children
PROLOGUE THE growing number of orphans and vulnerable children in Nigeria in recent times has become a source of worry for many Nigerians, who insist that the trend has negative implications to national development. Just recently, a report by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development put the number of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in the country at 17.5 million. About 7.3 million of the figure the report indicates were orphaned by HIV/AIDS, particularly in states with high prevalence. The remaining proportion lost their parents to other causes, most especially sectrian crises which are fast becoming regular in the nothern part of the country. As the number of orphans and vulnerable children in the country continues to rise, their plight, unfortunately, worsens. While several reasons has been adduced for the worsening plight of orphans and vulnerable children in the country, observers call for urgent and concerted efforts by government, corporate organisations and well-to do individuals to mitigate their plight, if for nothing else, to give them a sense of belonging. The government, in particular, these observers insist, has a lead role in this and should start by ensuring a healthy economy as well as bankrolling the education of these children, their medical needs, accommodation needs among others. -
